In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The opening of the Bible does not explain God, it expects him. How else could this world have come into being? Who else could have fashioned time, matter and space? If God is the first cause of everything in His universe, that means that if we want to rightly understand anything in this universe, we have to start with God:
- When we think about nature, we have to begin with God.
- When we think about humanity, who we are and why we are, we have to begin with God.
- When we think about family, we have to begin with God.
- When we think about our vocation, our purpose in life, we have to begin with God.
You name it. It all begins with God in one way or the other and it cannot be rightly understood apart from him. That is why Solomon would later write that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 1:7).
Sadly, we live in a world that is contrary to God and estranged from him, so that virtually every aspect of our life is twisted and tainted by sin. One more reason to return to the written and incarnate word of our Maker, and learn how to live as created beings in God’s world.
